The history of the tarot may begin long ago, with our ancestor's first discovery of communication through art and imagery, a time when the magic of fire stirred the passions of human thought and dream. Humanity sought to create a semblance of order out of the ever-changing universe, invoking and using language, symbol, music, and myth as tools. This yearning to create meaning out of the fabric of nature broadened the soul life of man as he traveled the earth’s terrain.

The Dalai Lama’s visit to the University of Oregon

Last week I had the opportunity to hear the Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, speak at Matthew Knight Arena at the University of Oregon. As the fifth of sixteen children, Gyatso was proclaimed the fourteenth Dalai Lama at the age of two. I wasn’t sure what to expect during his speech, but I knew that his visit would be monumental for the community and university.

During his introduction, the Dalai Lama addressed the audience as brothers and sisters. He had everyone raise their hand depending on which age category he called, but at the end said that this didn’t matter as much because we are all brothers and sisters. Throughout his speech he talked about the oneness of humanity.
