Since 1972, I have been studying thousands of horoscopes concerning lunar phases, the start of seasons, eclipses, the discovery of celestial bodies, current events, individuals, organizations, states, nations and – every so often – civilizations. Even though each of the major nations on the European continent has its own birth chart (for its most recent independence or founding as a republic) there is a moment in time from 1211 years ago that still captures the imagination of scholars and represents the birth of European Civilization: the crowning of Charles the Great (also known as Charlemagne) as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire by Pope Leo III at noon on Christmas Day, 800 AD, in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Charles the Great spent several decades in the 8th century conquering and uniting regions that are now known as France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria, Italy and Germany. Along the way, he helped establish Christianity as a continental religion and fostered a renaissance in art and culture.

The Sinking of the Titanic, World War I and II, and the Rise of Hitler

When doing some astrological research on the famous sinking of the Titanic (April 14 – 15, 1912), I noticed that the red planet Mars – a traditional malefic planet, particularly associated with violence, panics and disasters – was not only located in the water sign of Cancer as that giant ship sank in the North Atlantic, after being struck by an iceberg on its maiden voyage, but that the exact placement of Mars was on the Lunar South Node for Europe. It is often said that the Lunar South Node in any birth chart has much to do with karma and potential “self-undoing.”

The reason I was studying the sinking of the Titanic was that it was a world-shattering event in which 1,517 men, women and children – of all nationalities, races, religious beliefs, financial status, political views and social attitudes – were swept away, unexpectedly in just a few hours. It also symbolized something much more terrifying – that a World War might be coming that would engulf the lives of tens of millions of people.

Two years later, the first shots of that World War were fired in Sarajevo when the Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne) was assassinated by a radical, 19 year-old Serbian named Gavrilo Princip. This happened on June 28, 1914, when the Sun united with Europe’s Lunar South Node while Mars precisely crossed over Europe’s Saturn at the beginning of Virgo. Thirty-two days later, the so-called “war to end all wars” – World War I – began.

Exactly a quarter of a century later, Europe was once again on the edge of a knife as Adolf Hitler, Germany’s dictatorial chancellor since 1933, gobbled up nations like Austria, and parts of nations like the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia, in his quest for Germanic lebensraum (“living space”). The world was shocked to hear on August 23, 1939, that the Germans and Russians had concluded a Non-Aggression Pact – Hitler’s key treaty allowing Germany and Russia to carve up Poland, and preventing Russia (temporarily) for banding with the British and French in fighting against him in a new European war.

What was happening in the zodiac that summer was a stunner – concerning Mars (always a possible trigger for wars) and Europe’s chart from Christmas Day, 800 A.D. Mars made a station and turned retrograde at 5 degrees of Aquarius exactly as summer began on June 22, 1939. This put Mars right next to Europe’s Pluto (death-rebirth; extremes; the underworld) while Mars was also in an off-kilter, 150-degree link to Europe’s once-again karmic Lunar South Node. Then on the precise day of the Non-Aggression Pact, Mars stopped its retrograde motion and made another station at 24 degrees of Capricorn right next to Europe’s Juno (peace treaties and wise diplomacy when positive, but rage by the weak and disempowered when negative). Nine days later, on September 1, 1939, World War II began with the German invasion of Poland while Saturn at 1 degree of Taurus was exactly on top of Hitler’s Sun and exactly trine Saturn at 1 degree of Virgo in the chart for European Civilization.

Fast Forward to August-September of 2011

Even though the drama of sovereign debt crises in several European nations – notably Greece and also Ireland, Portugal and Spain – has been percolating since 2010, our American stock markets, as well as markets worldwide, were suddenly thrown into a destabilizing volatility in August, 2011, mainly over the dire situation of Greek insolvency, rising unemployment in that country, and the fear that if the Greek government defaulted, other European nations might fall (like the old domino theory regarding Communism taking over in Southeast Asia). Like clockwork, the red planet Mars united with the highly-sensitive and inflammatory 5+ degree Cancer placement on Europe’s Lunar South Node in August – this time setting aflame a Euro-dominated financial-investment catastrophe scenario that could bring the world into a kind of monetary warfare.

Meanwhile, just as the official start of summer in 1939 saw Mars station and turn retrograde, the summer of 2011 saw Vesta station and turn retrograde. I had already been reporting earlier this year about Vesta because NASA launched the Dawn spacecraft several years ago and it would be arriving at Vesta in July, 2011, for the first close-up pictures of a major asteroid. However, Vesta is not just any asteroid, but a celestial body ruling over safety and security themes (personally, nationally and internationally), insurance rates and coverage, plus the entire investment community – with its global implications. The Dawn spacecraft did arrive on time (in mid-July) and will be taking photos of Vesta for approximately a year.

What most people don’t realize is that when we send spacecraft to other celestial bodies, the archetypal themes of those celestial bodies rocket into a high-level of significance in our lives on Earth. For example, when Voyager II flew by aviation-ruling Uranus in January 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded. When Voyager II flew by Neptune three years later in the summer-fall of 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, Germany was reunited, Romania’s tyrant Ceausescu was executed by his people, and the death-knell for Communism (strongly affiliated with Neptune as a theme) was sounded. Therefore, to any professional astrologer – focusing attention on the field of Mundane or World Astrology during the summer of 2011 – it was clear that the potent safety, security, insurance and investment themes of Vesta would be prominent for everyone to clearly see.

The September 16 and 17 Stations of Pluto and Vesta

In the last couple of weeks, many prognosticators and business analysts have begun to speculate that via discussions among European politicians (like President Sarkozy of France, Chancellor Merkel of Germany, and Prime Minister Papandreou of Greece) a solution can be found to this enormous fiscal fiasco. From the standpoint of Mundane Astrology, an indication of this possibility occurred on September 16 and 17, 2011, as first Pluto (5 Capricorn) and then Vesta (7 Aquarius) halted their retrograde cycles and both turned direct. For two celestial bodies to stop their motion from the Earth’s point of view – virtually simultaneously over two days or within 28 hours – is very rare, thus underscoring the combined message of Pluto and Vesta to humanity at this time: Be prepared for extreme and deeply-transformative changes (Pluto) on the security, insurance and investment fronts (Vesta).

The European connection here is that Pluto’s station was within 1 degree of opposing the European horoscope’s supersensitive, karmic South Lunar Node, while Vesta’s station was right on top of Europe’s natal Pluto. The impact of these stations will be with us for months. While the challenges coming from the above stations are of great concern now, the most discordant alignment of all – where Pluto in Capricorn conjuncts the Sun degree of European Civilization for the first time in 248 years – is about to take place in 2012.

Coming up in Part II: The Problem of the Euro and the Jupiter-Saturn Great Mutations

The USA Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner has said recently that this European sovereign debt crisis is the world’s worst financial disaster waiting in the wings and that the leaders in Europe need to act on this immediately. Though America certainly bears its share of responsibility for its contribution to the problem, stemming from the subprime mortgage-housing meltdown and international banking system corruption of three years ago, if European governments start failing (which is different than the collapse of individual banks and multi-national corporations), we will be headed into a nightmarish financial disintegration with global ramifications.

In my previous three-part series highlighting the underlying causes of a global investment crisis, I pointed to 20 significant reasons, mostly astrology-based. For example, like it or not – we are going to have to deal with seven shocking and revolutionary Uranus-Pluto squares from Aries to Capricorn during 2012 to 2015  (which are mirror-images of their numerous squares from the early 1930s during The Great Depression). While so many souls are gazing to the solar system, deeply troubled by the increasing solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) coming from our Sun, as well as the arrival of potentially disastrous comets correlated to the end of the 5,125-year Long Count of the Mayan Calendar, we really have plenty on our global investment plate to handle here on our home planet.

It turns out that both the great mutations associated with Jupiter/Saturn conjunctions, which occur every 20 years in earth signs (since January 26, 1842), and the birth of the Euro (January 1, 1999) as a common currency for the many nations in the Euro Zone, are influencing and exacerbating the current sovereign debt crisis. In Part II, the main charts for these events will be presented in order to understand the perils of not solving this global monetary-debt conundrum. On a related note, I will also offer a clear explanation of why Hitler was able to take over most of Europe and how the up-and-coming transit of Pluto at 9 to 11 degrees of Capricorn will radically change the financial-social-political landscape of the world.

(I have utilized Charlemagne’s coronation chart in writing many astrological features during the past 30 years in Welcome to Planet Earth magazine and on my websites. Don’t be puzzled by seeing the date as December 29, 800 A.D. This is a “New Style” rendering in the eventual calendar shift from Julian to Gregorian. The actual planetary alignments in this birth map occurred on the Christmas Day celebrated in the year 800 A.D. Thanks to Barbara Watters and her 1971 paperback Sex and the Outer Planets for the chart information on the crowning of Charlemagne. The original calculations had come from Ralph Kraum.)
