What Are Flower Essences?
A
Flower Essence is a living energetic medicine made from the biological imprint
of the living plant's vibrations in water. Flower Essences are created and
preserved in pure spring water and a preservative (brandy, vodka or vinegar),
and taken orally under the tongue or applied to the body. When a person places
a few drops of a flower's essence under the tongue, the energy of the flower,
vibrating at its own special frequencies, floods one's aura. The flower's
vibrations are now within the body/aura's vibrations and the flower's
vibrations will harmonize the body/aura vibrations to its own special
harmonies, with the help of the flower's signature vibrations.
Flower Essences are a
fascinating and powerful way to work with plants for healing. They contain an
absolute minimum of biological or chemical material, offering one the sacred
energies of the flower's essences in vibrations imprinted within the
water/preservative mixture. Flower Essences are water-based solutions which
contain the essential energies of flowers. They are made by floating flowers in
water and allowing the light of the sun, or the moon or the stars, to help the
water to absorb the particular energy signature of the flowers. The structure
of water is such that it easily stores these vibrational signatures within
itself.
Unhealthy emotional
patterns can cause tensions of energy within the body, tightness in the muscles
and these block the natural flow of energies in our bodies, and so parts of us
cease to vibrate in harmony with the whole. In our healing of our unhealthy
patterns, we relieve any physical dis-ease we have collected. The Flower
Essences fill our auras with the vibrations they contain and so help loosen any
energy blockages that keep us from vibrating at our natural frequency. The
vibrations of the flower's sunlight are now stored and felt in the subtle, and
not so subtle, awareness.
History
It
was the work of a sensitive and dedicated physician, Dr. Edward Bach, which
first started to characterize the healing properties of these preparations. Dr.
Bach was a medical doctor who had an interest in homeopathy. He worked for many
years within this discipline and developed remedies called nosomes, which were
homeopathic preparations of bacteria. He became discouraged at how little it
seemed medicine was able to heal. His observations convinced him that if people
could be at peace emotionally, they would be restoring their body to health and
stay healthy. Recognizing that he had always felt most peaceful in the woods
near his childhood home in Wales, he decided to take a break from practice and
go there for a period of contemplation.
The story goes that
Dr. Bach was looking for answers, and failing to find them, he was walking
along a path one morning, ruminating on whether or not he should return to his
practice at all, when his attention was drawn to the lovely flowers of
Impatiens. Seeing the dew sparkling on the petals, he was drawn to lick it off,
as he remembered doing as a child. Being the sensitive he was, he realized that
the impatience he had been feeling a moment ago was gone. Whatever had been
guiding him suggested he should see if this effect could be reproduced by doing
the same thing the next day. The effect was repeated and the rest, as they say,
is the history of Flower Essences.
I am sure people have
worked with plants in this way for millennia: washing one's face with dew on
Beltane morning, or being prompted to lick the dew off particularly beautiful
flowers, just as Dr. Bach was inspired to do. However, Dr. Bach was unique in
having discovered a way to bring the healing vibrations of the flowers to folks
across the world. What Dr. Bach realized was that the water that had sat on the
flowers had soaked in some sort of the energy of the flowers that could have
had an effect on his emotions.
Just as the Impatiens flower helped dispel impatience
and irritability, Dr. Bach discovered that Mimulus could calm everyday fears.
As he worked with the flowers, characterizing the effect they could have on
emotions, he discovered that if he could give the right flower essence to
lessen the predominant emotion that was disturbing a person's peace, certain
physical ailments they suffered could also be relieved. Dr. Bach taught that if
we help people achieve emotional harmony, they will be healthy. He demonstrated
that two people who experience debilitating fear may have different physical
ailments, but a remedy that addresses this fear will heal the ailments of both.
Similarly, two people with similar cases of eczema but different emotions
disturbing their peace can both have their eczema healed by taking remedies
appropriate to their emotional symptoms.

How Are Essences Made?
It is not feasible to generate enough flower
essences for a growing population by collecting dew from the plant; therefore,
a more efficient alchemical process has been developed. The system involves
placing flower petals or plant leaves and stems in a clear glass or crystal
bowl of clear spring water which is then set in the sun for a certain
prescribed period of time so that the healing properties of the flower can be
transferred from the flower to the water. The soul consciousness of the person
collecting the essence is an important part of the equation, as is the
placement of moon, stars and planets, at the time the essence is made. Once the
essence or pattern of the flower is transferred to the water, the water is
carefully collected in sterilized Mother Stock bottles and preserved with an equal
amount of preservative, and made available for use.
When the elixir is complete, the pattern, or
energy medicine, of the flower has been released into the water. With the aid
of Kirlean photography, beautiful shapes and designs can be seen in each
individual water droplet, revealing the unique qualities of the particular
flower essence. Nature has various ways of showing herself to us. Our greatest
mysteries are imprinted in our own souls in the form of refined energetic
etchings, which we then seek to replicate. Each flower essence resonates a
tone, frequency, color and light body that mirrors aspects of human development
and evolution. Nature and humanity work hand in hand in order to interweave
divine love with the experience of incarnation and earth consciousness. It is
nothing less than a beautiful art, a divine work of spiritual principles, for
the essences balance, refine and engage each individual with a greater
understanding of nature, the earth kingdom and the alchemical mysteries: As
Above, So Below.
Helpful Notes and Ideas for Flower Essence Makers
Listed below are some of the items you will need to make an essence:
- Clear glass bowl
(not a cut crystal bowl as the pattern of the cut crystal will infuse into
the essence)
- Boston Round
amber bottles (one quart-size bottle for the Mother Stock and two, 1 1/2
ounce dropper bottles for storage and remedy preparation)
- Sterilized funnel
- Beakers
- Long surgery
tweezers
- Tongs
- Clean cotton
gloves
- Clean flat plate
- Brandy, vodka or
vinegar to act as a preservative
- Clear spring
water
- Notebook and
journal
- Mosquito net, if
out in the woods or mountain slopes
- Large hotpad
mitts to put your bottle of Mother Stock in after it has been prepared to
protect it from heat and breakage
- A sturdy backpack
to carry tools and items if hiking out in the woods or mountains
- A wild flower
handbook or guide
- Crystal gemstone
to place near the bowl for protection and clearing of energy
- Bonsai cutting
sheers
- A sunny day with few
or patchy clouds
It
is best to begin preparation in the early morning. Gather all tools and needed
items, attune to the area where you wish to make the essence, and try to get
the essence going by 9:00 or 9:30 a.m. The essence will take 2 1/2 to 3 hours
to make.
Identify the flowers you wish to gather in the
most non-intrusive manner possible. The less contact you have with the natural
space and the plant, itself, the better. Note where you will place the bowl of
spring water and place it there, ready to receive the flowers before you pick
the blossoms. I check my essence every now and then, however, I do not go very
near as I am aware of the magic circle of fairy light that is weaving this elixir
into a healing remedy. I don’t want to disturb this process.
One develops an enchanting relationship with
nature when making essences. I have prepared many essences far into the wild
woods and mountains where the purest and freshest wild flowers live, and have
had some engaging encounters with animals and birds while doing so. Hummingbirds
have hovered and sat on the edge of the essence bowl, eagles have flown in
circle overhead and various owls have paid their respects. Try it yourself and
see what happens!

How to Take Flower Essences
You can take five to
seven drops of the essence under the tongue three times a day, or add 1/2 dropper full to your daily water bottle. You may choose to do both.
You can also bathe with flower essences by putting a dropper full of your essence into a bath. Or you can apply the essence topically on the soles of the feet, the inside of the wrist, the nape of the neck, and more carefully, the temples and the center of the forehead.
It is often suggested that the essences be taken first thing in the morning, and again when retiring at night. They must be stored in a cool, dry area in order to preserve their shelf life. They may grow mold or bacteria if left in the hot sun or exposed to excessive light. Do not keep them in a hot car or room in your home, especially if you are storing stock bottles for use as a practitioner.
Enjoy the splendor of your flower essences, and may you prosper and live well.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are flower essences?
The Flower Remedies - a simple and natural method discovered by Edward Bach of establishing equilibrium and harmony within the body by means of non-poisonous wild flowers. They are completely benign and result in no unpleasant reactions. They can be taken by person of all ages. There is no danger of an overdose or side effects, and they have proved to be very effective for animals and plant life.
Nature provides the air we breathe, the food we eat, the very essence of life itself- so who can deny that it must also provide the means to make us well! We must not forget that nearly all forms of medicine are derived originally from plant life - so there should be nothing odd or strange regarding the healing properties of wild flowers.
The Flower Essences bring into the body the higher vibrations of the sun now present in the flowers and so bathing our bodies with the essences of the flowers and their very high vibrations. The body thrills to their presence, the cells themselves bathing in the flower's solar vibrations.
How are they used as a healing modality?
In the words of Edward Bach:
"The action of these Remedies is to raise our vibrations and open up our channels for the reception of our Spiritual Self; to flood our natures with the particular virtue we need, and wash out from us the fault which is causing harm. They are able, like beautiful music or any glorious uplifting thing which gives us inspiration, to raise our very natures, and bring us nearer to our souls, and by that very act bring us peace and relieve our sufferings. They cure, not by attacking disease, but by flooding our bodies with the beautiful vibrations of our Higher Nature, in the presence of whom disease melts away as snow in the sunshine.
What is the origin and history of flower essences?
Discovered by Edward Bach, the Bach Remedies - established in 1936 - act as a form of supportive therapy. Having proven themselves in this form for an unblemished fifty years or more, they are now in great demand throughout the world as a non-medicinal adjunct to various forms of treatments. They are, therefore, an integral part of the whole healing spectrum, not as an alternative or interfering vehicle, but as a very respected complement to many restorative treatments and therapies.
How can only 4 to 7 drops of a remedy do so much?
It has often been said that the simplicity of this work baffles the professionals, and people attempt to look for something that is not there. Nature provides the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the very essence of life itself- so who can deny that it must also provide the means to make us well! We must not forget that nearly all forms of medicine are derived originally from plant life-so there should be nothing odd or strange regarding the healing properties of wild flowers.
Some say the remedies have a placebo effect. Is that true?
No. This notion can be disproven by the successful use of flower remedies on animals and little children. Often, too, an individual in an extremely irritable mood or vile temper has been helped successfully, and a person in this condition would certainly not be receptive to any form of auto-suggestion.
Are flower essences habit forming. Do they have side effects?
The answer is NO in both cases. They can be taken by people of all ages and there is no danger of an overdose or side effects. Even should the wrong choice be made, no harm would ensue.
What is the healing force behind flower essences?
In the words of Edward Bach:
"In true healing the nature and the name of the physical disease is of no consequence whatever. Disease of the body itself is nothing but the result of the disharmony between soul and mind. It is only a symptom of the cause, and as the same cause will manifest itself differently in nearly every individual, seek to remove this cause, and the after results, whatever they may be, will disappear automatically."
"There are seven beautiful stages in the healing of disease, these are - Peace. Hope. Joy. Faith. Certainty. Wisdom. Love."
"We should strive to be so gentle, so quiet, so patiently helpful that we move among our fellow men more as a breath of air or a ray of sunshine: ever ready to help them when they ask: but never forcing them to our own views."
A few good quotes:
"We think that most aware people are convinced that life is composed of a Oneness - a unity of Higher-self, mind and body, and in obtaining a balance or equilibrium embracing all three, then the body (created as the most perfect healing machine) would be allowed to do its job properly. It is when there is disharmony that the door opens to allow disease, weakness, depression and so on to enter."
"Bach Remedies work on the mental/spiritual level and will not interfere with the curing of the body by other measures - they in fact hasten recovery by tackling the psychogenic aspect of a person's illness, which relates to the real cause."
"It is not the disease that is of importance. It is the patient; the way in which he or she is affected which is our true guide to healing." "Dr. Bach, like Paracelsus, knew that if our spiritual and mental aspects were in harmony, illness could not exist."
"Disease is the result of wrong thinking and wrong doing, and ceases when the act and thought are put in order."
"True, hate may be conquered by a greater hate, but it can only be cured by love … If you listen to the teachings of Krishna, Buddha, or Christ, you will find always the teaching of good overcoming evil. Christ taught us not to resist evil, to love our enemies, to bless those who prosecute us - there is no 'like curing like' in this. And so in true healing, and so in spiritual advancement, we must always seek good to drive out evil, love to conquer hate, and light to dispel darkness. Thus must we avoid all poisons, all harmful things, and use only the beneficent and beautiful."
"Health exists when there is perfect harmony between Soul and mind and body: and this harmony, and this harmony alone, must be attained before cure can be accomplished. In the future there will be no pride in being ill: on the contrary, people will be as ashamed of sickness as they should be of crime."

Pioneering work in the fields of vibrational medicine has brought to our attention the properties of high frequency healing and progressive medicine. The word vibration has become synonymous with energy, for we have learned that our bodies are fields of vibrating energy. Contained within each person's energetic field are at least seven major energy centers known as Chakras. The relationship of these centers to physical and spiritual well-being has been studied by Eastern teachers and religious adepts since antiquity. Fortunately, due to a resurgence of interest in esoteric matters, we are once again able to benefit from this kind of study. As we re-educate ourselves in this way, it is imperative that we study the energetic fields and vibrational patterns of the natural world, for we deny the wisdom of Mother Nature at our own peril.
One of the great names in the field of vibrational healing is Dr. Edward Bach, the founding father of Bach Flowers Essences which he brought to the attention of the medical establishment in England in the 1930s. Dr. Bach was a sensitive and contemplated man who dedicated his life to humanity, tirelessly seeking ways to alleviate human suffering and bring comfort to the human spirit.
A medical doctor steeped in the integral field of homeopathy, Dr. Bach began to case study the healing effects of the flower's essence, which he had discovered while collecting dewdrops from plants at dawn. Theorizing that such drops contained energy patterns or signatures of the plants from which they were derived, he further supposed that when ingested by human beings, the essence of the various flowers would match vibrational patterns stored within the genetic miasma, or memory banks, of the human body.
These memory centers determine an individual's propensity for disease and emotional, mental and spiritual suffering, which eventually manifest as illness unless overcome through conscious living and an alignment or balancing of the entire system of the human body. Not all people are able to recover from an illness, although they may take the same medication as others who have the same illness. Dr. Bach was able to distinguish different character types, constitutions and karmic conditions that individualize each patient's "body blueprint" and circumstances. Consequently, he experimented with the application of flower essences as a way to heal his patients' internal fears, frustrations, anger, hopelessness, etc., that had created obstacles to full recovery.
How fortunate for us that Dr. Bach was such an astute observer of the plant kingdom, for his theories have proven correct. His 38 remedies have aided humanity for over sixty years, inspiring other, like minded individuals to engage in similar efforts creating new varieties of flowers essences for the greater good.
Such operational healing modalities are, in general, not new. Flower essences no doubt existed long before Dr. Bach's discovery, for example. In fact, it is conjectured by mystics and historians alike that they were widely in use in Atlantis, Lemuria and, of course, ancient Egypt. Similarly, sound and color vibrations are thought to have played a very significant and therapeutic role in Egypt. Also, China has embraced flowers for their healing properties for centuries and the art of gem healing was and continues to be a common practice throughout Asia.
The process by which a flower creates its own elixir is nothing less than alchemical, for the four elements are readily available and vital to the process. Earth sustains the seed and the root system; air offers oxygen and wind, helping to fertilize the plant; fire, in the form of sunlight, brings light and growth, offering the planet toward the heavens; and water feeds the plant, expanding its properties in order that it may produce the dew.

Words from Edward Bach
"There are great qualities in which all men and women are gradually perfecting themselves, possibly concentrating upon one or two at a time. They are those which have been manifested in the earthly lives of all the great masters who have, from time to time, come into the world to teach us, and help us to seethe easy and simple ways of overcoming all our difficulties. These are such as: LOVE, SYMPATHY, PEACE, STEADFASTNESS, GENTLENESS, STRENGTH, UNDERSTANDING, TOLERANCE, WISDOM,FORGIVENESS, COURAGE, and JOY.
And it is by perfecting these qualities in ourselves that each one of us is raising the whole world a step nearer to its final unthinkably glorious goal. We realize then that we are seeking no selfish gain or personal merit, but that every single human being, rich or poor, high or low, is of the same importance in the Divine Plan, and is given the same mighty privilege of being a savior of the world simply by knowing that he/she is a perfect child of the Creator.
As there are these qualities, these steps to perfection, so there are hindrances, or interferences which serve to strengthen us in our determination to stand firm. These are the real causes of disease, and are of such as: RESTRAINT, FEAR, RESTLESSNESS, INDECISION, INDIFFERENCE, WEAKNESS, DOUBT, OVER-ENTHUSIASM, IGNORANCE, IMPATIENCE, TERROR, and GRIEF.
Real health is happiness and happiness so easy of attainment because it is happiness in small things, doing the things that we really love to do, being with the people that we truly like. There is no strain, no effort, no striving for the unattainable. Health is there for us to accept any time we like."

Nature and the Sacred Sciences
The
Wild Rainbow Irises of Southern Louisiana
By Tara McKinney
As circumstance would have it, due to the earthquake and tsunami
in Japan on March 11, Inner Sight’s Isha Lerner was forced to postpone a
business trip to Tokyo scheduled for the following week. The most unfortunate
events in Japan allowed Isha to travel to New Orleans (where I live), instead,
for a pilgrimage around Southern Louisiana collecting wild Louisiana Iris
essences during the short window of opportunity when they are in peak bloom in
late March and early April.
Together, Isha and I traveled to an ancient swamp in Abbeville,
Louisiana, where four species of Irises have grown side by side and undisturbed
over several hundred years. To make a long story short, through the generosity
of Bud and Rusty McSparrins, who own and operate a wild Iris sanctuary
populated with thousands of Irises from the Abbeville swamp, we were able to
gather the precious Louisiana Iris essences that are now available through our
site and which Isha will be sharing with the people of Japan during her visit
there in the Fall.
The connection between the Sacred Sciences and Flower Essences is
perhaps best epitomized by the plant signature of the Iris: in particular, the
wild Iris of Southern Louisiana. The luminous Iris gets its name from the Rainbow
Goddess of Greek mythology. Given the Iris’ rainbow-themed signature, which
truly represents the flowering of consciousness in all its multi-hued dimensions,
from the deepest depths to the highest heights, it should come as no surprise
that Southern Louisiana, the site of recurring cycles of utter devastation and
astonishing rebirth over the past 300 years, is known as “Iris Heaven” or “The
Center of the Iris Universe.” Much like New Orleans’ human citizens, its Iris
community is an amazingly resilient and highly-creative melting pot of
iridescent displays.
I cannot stress enough the significance of the theme of death and
rebirth as the absolute wellspring of the Sacred Sciences, flowing forth from
the Mystery Schools of the ancient world. Without this process of utmost
surrender to the natural ebbing and flowing of life, one’s inner knowing is superficial
and distorted. Irises essences function like shamanic guides through the inner
terrain of natural death and rebirth cycles, facilitating one’s descent to the
greatest depths of embodied experience, as well as one’s subsequent ascent to
the heights of sublime transcendence, along with every color of the spectrum in
between.
Since the dawn of recorded history, the Iris has been a thread
woven into the fabric of civilization. It has been the flower of royalty and
priests, used in the practice of magic and medicine, alike. Of the
approximately 200 species of Iris, five are indigenous to Southern Louisiana.
Hundreds of years ago in the general vicinity of New Orleans, Irises grew in
such profusion, in such close proximity to established civilization and in so
complete a color representation that they were impossible to ignore. It seems
likely that many a Native American or European explorer would have stumbled
across these beauties and regarded their spectacular rainbow display of color
with awe and admiration. Surely, among the people of the local swamp culture,
noted for their connection with the mystical and occult, colorful voodoo
rituals involving shamanic descent and rebirth would have been a common
occurrence. And, surely, the equally-colorful, wild Louisiana Irises would have
played an integral part in such practices.
Of the five Iris species indigenous to Southern Louisiana, perhaps
the most noteworthy is the I. Fulva, a feisty, little Iris if ever there was
one. Originally limited to the vicinity of New Orleans where she grew wild
along the bayous in the heart of the city, the I. Fulva stands only two to three
feet in height, with a single flower on each stem. Her claim to fame, and it’s
a big one, is the fact that she single-handedly introduced the color red to the
genus Iris. In fact, when shipped to England in 1814, this species created a
major sensation by virtue of her red color alone. Tuning into the essence of
this Iris is like encountering a cross between Pippi Longstocking and Mother
Kali: playful, spunky, passionately creative and fiercely compassionate. Her
emergence on the Iris scene represented the potential for nothing less than
full embodiment in the human laboratory of experience and, consequently, the
full, rainbow spectrum display of life on planet Earth.
New Orleans has long been known for its full, rainbow spectrum
display of creativity on the grand stage of the evolutionary drama in which we
are all engaged, and many people and cultures from around the world have been
inspired by its particularly colorful vortex of energy. The people of Japan are
a timely case in point. The first faint shimmering of a Rainbow Bridge between
New Orleans and Japan began to appear in the 1920s when the Japanese were first
exposed to the sound of New Orleans-style jazz, with its deepest roots in the
intense yearning of New Orleans’ pre-Civil War slave population for freedom and
creative expression. It was love at first sound for the Japanese people,
perhaps hearing the echoes of their own yearning for true freedom and the full
range of creative flowering.
The Rainbow Bridge connecting New Orleans and Japan has grown
stronger and more vibrant over the years. These days, the Japanese have more
Louis Armstrong impersonators and Jazz enthusiasts per capita than any other
country on earth! As an expression of their love for New Orleans’ culture and
people, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the people of Japan donated more
than $40 million dollars to New Orleans’ relief efforts. Now, in the wake of
the recent earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis in Japan, the people of New
Orleans are returning the favor, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for
relief efforts there. In this context, the Iris theme (stylized in the form of
the ubiquitous New Orleans’ Fleur de Lis) emerges more powerfully than ever as
a symbol of rebirth and creative renewal, as well as of the Rainbow Bridge
between New Orleans and Japan.
Our prayer for you, as well as for the people of Japan, is that
our Louisiana Iris essences help facilitate your rebirth and renewal into the
full range of creative expression and freedom that is the birthright of all
human beings on earth at this time in our evolutionary journey.
